    Preparing For Greater Reincarnation

With Greater Reincarnation slated to appear in the Store the first weekend of March, I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I want to take the plunge with my original character.

Post Script Edit: One other thing I should definitely mention is before you Greater Reincarnate, you need to have access to 32 point builds. If you haven’t unlocked the favor already, there is a sale on 32 point builds going on in the Store this week.

With his one level of multiclassing amid his levels of bard, I can’t decide if I should just upgrade him to 32, or scrub out that level of fighter while I’m at it with the Greater +1. There are some considerations before you just let Kruz burn your body to ash to feed to his tree, so to speak.

    Going Greater

The main reason to go “Greater” with a reincarnation is upgrading him from the old 28 point character to a 32 point character. Back when I was a player, this is a day I never imagined would actually come! I always had a note of sadness thinking that my poor faithful little bard, the first character I ever made, would always be sub-par compared to those characters that would come after him. Now it’s like a reunion in a way. I’m not sure that I’ll change much about him… except that one level of fighter that still haunts me.

    Scrubbing Out Mistakes

Back when the level cap was only 10, I remember being vexed by that level of fighter I took. I would forever always be out of reach of the final level of bardicness. With the Greater +1 I’ll be able to kill two birds with one stone it seems: upgrading to 32 point build, and removing that level of fighter. I need to be careful though, because the level swap provided by the +1 in theory could be used to multiclass another level of my choosing… but my intent would be to convert the level of fighter into just bard to be straight bard. I was tempted to replace it with a level of Sorc, but I think I’ll dabble with that on an alt some time.

    Careful Planning

I’m pretty happy with my bard, but in the event I felt like changing some stuff around while I was at it - besides just getting the extra ability points - it’s a good idea to think ahead. I mean effectively this lets me completely and utterly redo him, and without fear of changing something that was handy at mid level, but grew less so at high level. I can completely spec him around my current game play style. I should probably be careful because since there is always new stuff being introduced, something that seemed “useless” to me at this level may come back around and I might regret getting rid of it… but I guess that’s what re-reincarnating is for heh. At least now I won’t feel “stuck” no matter what happens in the future.

There are many great resources for such purposes, but there’s no better resource than your fellow players. Talk to other players who have characters in the style you’re thinking of is an excellent way to find out if that aspect of a character will be something you’ll like. But there’s nothing that says you can’t just experiment and do something because you “feel” like it. Customizing a character can be challenging but also rewarding, so do what works for you! For me, I continue to banter with the other Bards seeing what they like (and dislike) about the way they play theirs vs the choices they made to end up that way. I’m particularly interested in talking with other Bardic friends who plan on reincarnating to hear what they plan on “fixing” (or “changing”) about themselves.

It’s funny, but a long time ago Reincarnation was foretold by an unusual community prophet. Though it’s not 100% the same, I can’t help but think back to this very interestingly worded suggestion. I’m glad to see we now have something that is a shade of this old idea, to not let an old character go to waste! I’m interested in hearing about how you plan on preparing for your greater reincarnations! Leave a comment below or ping me back by writing in your blog and including a link to this post!

I’m considering using Greater Reincarnation on Beefheart the Vegetarian, my old 28 point build, first-ever DDO character on Sarlona (currently level 16). He’s the “default” fighter build by Turbine back in 2006, obviously I could improve him with GR. How much the GR mechanism costs in the DDO Store will ultimately be the deciding factor.

why no talk about GR on the forums so that people can finally has something to cheer about?

    3. DagazUlf Says:

What I consider my first Character (and Namesake), shall be making the jump from 28pt Fighter to 32pt Fighter with a GR. More CON is definitely in his future, but I’m toying with either adding UMD or Intimidate. As a THF with a cruddy AC, I’m not sure the Intimidate is really that practical, though.

    4. THAC0 Says:

My original character, 28pt build - Wiz: Sparks, desperately needed this so with all of the issue surrounding the delay of it… I’m glad the kinks have been worked out. I am happy to see it finally coming. What a nice B-day gift as my birthday is in March. :)

PS: Would have been nice to see this in the Announcements… everyone has been up in arms about this since Mod 3 hit. my 2 pp…. :)

    5. Tharlak Says:

Really looking forward to GR, just hoping that +3’s will be available at the same time. I have a bigger mess to clean up on my original 28pt character.

‘why no talk about GR on the forums so that people can finally has something to cheer about?’

Because they will still complain, that is what the forums are for.

    7. Strakeln Says:

I suspect you took that level of fighter in part for the weapon proficiencies, is that correct?

So that means you’ll be using Master’s Touch once the fighter level is gone?

Exxxxxxcellent. Perhaps now that problem will get some attention :)

    8. QuantumFX Says:

I think you should try a fire specced battlebard build.

      Here’s one in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAtBki0PsC0

I have at least 3 28pters from back in the day to Gtr. I almost want a Gtr+20 for my cleric so he can become an FVS (Hint: make turn undead more useful). Sooo… March weekend eh?

Any hints on when half-orcs will come? Are they on the current Update bookings? You showed us DDO skeletal anims of them > 2 years ago. Finish it already!!! :)

    10. Christofell Says:

My Barbarian/Fighter desperately needs more Con and Str, 28 to 32 pts will be a big leap for him, I’ll also respec some of his skills (focusing almost solely on Balance, Jump and Spot and 1 rank of tumble), furthermore I’ll throw out some feats and replace them with something more useful and when Half-Orcs come around! Ohh golly, will that be fun! They should get rage bonuses. *Hint hint HINT* :D

Problem with my greater reinc 28ptr potential is he started off dwarf while I tried to see how the Europe situation faired. I think it took 10mins of play before I became a VIP and by that time I was around friends and before I knew it he was a level I didn’t want to start again. If I could I would make him warforge but that is not an option, and ofc rerunning another barb which I honestly don’t enjoy is just to tiresome :p

Other than that there is no need for greater reinc’s on my characters :D

    13. Ulfgaar Says:

I know I can’t wait for the Greater Reincarnation. My main cleric has over 3300 favor so I really can’t even think about reincarnation. Also being a cleric it isn’t quite needed in my case. I will be excited to take out the points of Heal I put into him when the game came out and place them into Jump.

This is a day that the long time gamers have been waiting for. :)

    14. Rabscuttle Says:

I’m excited to see Greater Reincarnation arrive! I just hope the pricing isn’t prohibitive… or at least a way to earn it in game.

    15. DagazUlf Says:

I was very excited (per post #3), but with this pricing scheme and the general slap-in-the-face that this feels like for all my years in DDO, my balloon has burst. Just ridiculous.

    16. Rabscuttle Says:

So much for that particular hope. If you talk to the pricing gurus, please let them know that 3 months of VIP points for a single character to be GR’d is a bit… prohibitive.
